London's top ten trainers
KATHRYN FREELAND
Who
are her clients? Everyone from busy professionals to Cate Blanchett
and Samantha Morton.
What is she like? Realistic and practical
(shows you the sort of exercises you can work into your day) but
seriously tough
How much pain? As much as the client can take
without putting them off. "Everyone is different," says Kathryn. "Some
people love pain, but some you'll never see again if you cause them
pain. I have to work out, quickly, which is which."
Most
likely to: get you outside to get some fresh air and daylight as
well as exercise. She's hugely into fitness being a skill people need to
acquire for life, rather than something you do as an occasional binge.
Least
likely to: be patronising. "Fitness isn't some sort of elite club,"
she says, "it's something for everyone to do in whatever way suits them."
Signature:
Core and balance work combined with outdoor fitness - lunges in the park
and press-ups against the park bench.
Waiting list? No
("that's not what I'm about; it sounds arrogant"). She's fully booked
but can juggle clients among her able team of trainers.
Where and
how much? Central London - she travels to you, rather than vice
versa.

The Me Team
Ever wondered how some people manage to look ridiculously fabulous
amidst such a busy schedule? How do they find the time to sweat it out
in the gym, perfect their downward dog or get a decent back rub? With
home visits from a finely edited army of pamperers and fitness gurus, of
course. India (never-say-no-to-a-massage) Rowe went in search of her
very own dream team...
When I booked my home session with Kathryn
Freeland, fitness pundit, celebrity trainer, and managing director of
Absolute Fitness, I have to admit I was excited and just a teensy bit
scared. I was about to get a taster of what all her finely honed
celebrity clients get but
I was anxious at just how hard I was going
to have to work at it. Yes, I did sweat and pant (a lot), and no, I
didn’t know how much more my poor muscles could take of boxing whilst
holding weights (great for the bingo wings apparently!) but you know
what? It was all extremely fun! Kathryn has that special knack for
making what we simply can’t push ourselves to do on our own, into
something enjoyable. Whether you want to tone wobbly bits behind closed
doors or leap and bound around your local park or common, then
Battersea-based Kathryn or a member of her team of top personal trainers
are only a phone call away...

Training Q&A
Q.
Many training schedules seem to be for people with sedentary jobs, I'm a
landscape gardener and often clock up 50 miles a week walking behind a
lawnmower. When the schedule tells me to do a 10-miler, how do I relate
this to my occupation?
A. The basic rule is that if you are training for a specific event, such as running a marathon, you need to train for it specifically, by running. You may feel fit from walking long distances, but you still need to build up your running gradually. This will condition your body to run and reduce the risk of injury. Walking doesn't stimulate your cardiovascular system in the same way as running. If you feel you need more of a challenge, do some low-impact cross-training such as swimming, cycling or rowing and some strengthening exercises for the core upper-body and legs. Do not increase the amount of running outside of your programme. - Kathryn Freeland, personal trainer and managing director, Absolute Fitness.

The Really
Useful Gym Guide
Striking a balance: 'To be balanced and
productive, a training programme should include a core base of aerobic
activity interspersed with strength and flexibility work,' says Kathryn
Freeland, Cate Blanchett's personal trainer and founder of Absolute
Fitness. 'Don't limit yourself to one exercise,' says Freeland. 'If you
want to get fitter and lose weight, you'll get better results by mixing
up different exercises, rather than spending hours on the same machine.'
Maximising health benefits: 'Results come with hard work, so make every rep count. If your goal is to develop long, lean muscles and build strength not bulk, go to three to four sets of 20 reps,' says Freeland.
'A lot of exercisers think they can get a flat tummy just by doing crunches, but you need to get rid of the fat first with plenty of cardio work - running, swimming, cycling and so on.' Kathryn Freeland (celebrity trainer and founder of Absolute Fitness)

The Arms
The beauty of a six-week course with Kathryn Freeland,
founder of Absolute Fitness, is that it’s totally tailored. It’s a
modern take on personal training, where the focus is on the details,
from what keeps you motivated to what snacks you eat… ‘For that
feminine, sculpted look, you need to avoid heavy weights,’ Kathryn says.
The sessions were gruelling but her motivational techniques encouraged
me to work to my full extent, rather than just throwing in the towel at

creating a personalised, effective and achievable goal.

Freeland who runs Absolute Fitness, a mobile personal training company.

what suits your body and lifestyle.”

Kathryn
Freeland of Absolute Fitness has these everyday toning tips. . ‘The
backs of the arms are hard to target, but this works: in the car, place
hands either side of the steering wheel and squeeze arms together,
keeping your shoulders relaxed.’
. ‘When you’re on the telephone, stand on one leg; slowly bend the weight-bearing leg at the knee, and hold for as long as you can.’ This is great for toning the bottom.
To target the bicep, carry bags on your forearm with your palm facing up. ‘To make it more intense, keep the bicep tense.’….Taking deep breaths increases your lung capacity, as well as having a calming effect.

Raise the Tone
A
regular workout will provide the essentials – a flatter stomach, leaner
thighs – but, when it comes to baring almost all on the beach, it’s
precision toning that can make the real difference. We asked Kathryn
Freeland, fitness trainer and founder of Absolute Fitness, for her
choice of exercises that work specific problem areas – a pad of flesh
above the knee, or less-than-perfectly toned upper arms – to create the
ultimate beach-body spot check. Exercises include the plie, tricep
triangles, calf raises, chest flye, chest row, lateral raise, the

Total Makeover - Julia’s 5 eating
commandments
1. Eat regularly - Julia was eating too late… and
finished with ice cream. As she wants to eat with her husband she should
have a snack at 6pm so she eats less later.
2. Get organised – Shopping for good food regularly means she has ingredients handy to whip up a fast, healthy dinner even when she gets home late.
3. Snack smart – Julia spends long hours on set where tea and biscuits are get-through-the-day staples. Healthy snacks will help her say no (fruit, nuts, yoghurt).
4. Have clever takeaways – Time preparing food is not always realistic. Poached salmon sandwiches, soup and a whole grain roll or sushi are all healthy lunch options.
5. Indulge in style – Nothing is off limits says Kathryn because deprivation breeds resentment and binging.

Elegantly Waisted
According
to Kathryn Freeland, the real secret to toning the tummy Is exercising
all four of the muscle groups rather than doing endless sit-ups that
only target the six-pack muscles. ‘I often see people doing 200 sit-ups
a day and still wondering why they don’t have that sculpted
stomach’ says Kathryn. ‘It’s a complete myth that the more sit-ups you
do, the better – toning the stomach is about the quality of the exercise
and not the quantity.’ …These exercises will define and firm the stomach
but, if you still have that little tyre around the midriff, you will
need to do some cardiovascular exercise, too. Try running, cycling or
swimming.

. ‘The
most energising exercise for Sally will involve getting outdoors, as she
spends most of her day inside working at her computer…Her improved CV
fitness will also improve her general fitness levels, leaving her body
able to combat harmful stress. Sally said she’d tried to run regularly
in the past but found it hard – that’s partly because of the way she
runs. She tends to land flat-footed, which jars her spine, and she
hunches up her shoulders as she runs, resulting in a build up of
tension. She should consciously try to land on her heel and roll through
the toe with every step, while relaxing her shoulders. Putting your
tongue on the roof of your mouth is one way to ease the tension as it’s
impossible to tense the neck and shoulder muscles while you’re doing it.

In their

The
benefits of taking your exercise are enormous reveals Kathryn …First off
exercise has as much to do with your head as your body. Research has
shown that exercising outdoors produces more endorphins than working out
indoors does, thus reducing your stress levels and making you feel
happier. And once away from air conditioning your heart and lungs will
use direct oxygen far more efficiently, so that your cardio vascular
system will allow you to work harder and longer.

When’s the best time to exercise?
It
depends…When your body temperature is at its highest, your muscles are
warm and at less risk of injury – and you should grab the chance to work
out. But according to Kathryn Freeland, MD of Absolute Fitness, the
optimum time of day for exercise depends a lot on your lifestyle. 'If
you rush around doing an active job, for example, then you'll warm up
earlier in the day than if you sit in an office all day.' So everyone is
different – just remember that any exercise, whether it's in the
morning, afternoon or evening, is better than none at all

out her bad eating habits. “She was on the road doing a log of PR and
was just grabbing food from service stations ...
I got her to eat a balanced diet at sensible times”. ….. “We did a mixture of cardiovascular and strength training,” says Kathryn of Jade’s sessions with her. “She couldn’t run much as she wasn’t fit enough, so I got her to do 30 minutes of mixed jogging, walking and sprinting. Q.
I have changed my diet to include lots of fruit and fresh juice but
haven’t lost any weight. What am I doing wrong?A. Kathryn Freeland
Managing Director of personal training company Absolute Fitness: Many
people forget that although fruit and juices are very good for you and
full of nutrients, they also have calories. For example an average apple
has 60kcal, orange 50kcal and a banana 70kcal; pure unsweetened orange
or apple juice per 250ml glass has 117kcal. So if you have just added
fruit and juice into your diet rather than using it to substitute, say,
chocolate, biscuits or crisps, you will actually be having more calories
than before and thus put on weight! Always remember that most food and
drink, except water, contains calories. If you are an average size woman
and trying to lose weight, you should be aiming to eat on average about
1500kcal per day, which, if you are having a couple of large glasses of
fruit juice a day, at 500kcal, doesn’t leave much room for food! Try
drinking your juice mixed half and half with water to save calories.

outdoors,' says Kathryn Freeland of Absolute Fitness. 'Doing it in a
group is a more social, motivating and fun way to exercise.'
However,
if you're going to start running, it's absolutely crucial to get the
technique right. A few sessions with Kathryn illustrated exactly what I
was doing wrong and radically transformed my running technique. The
first thing Kathryn taught me was not to begin by stretching. Runners
often have tight quads and hamstrings, and stretching cold muscles is a
good way to injure them. Once you're actually running, Kathryn has a
list of mental checks to ensure that you are adopting the correct
footfall. She also has slightly more unusual tips, one of which is
sticking your tongue on the roof of your mouth to prevent shoulders and
jaw tensing up. 'The effort of holding your tongue makes it impossible
to clench your jaw,' says Kathryn.

with five sets of specific toning exercises. She's been finding doing
sit-ups has bulked her lower tummy, which is very common. A lot of
people have the wrong technique - they don't hold their tummies in
during the exercise and don't stretch afterwards. Or they just do
crunches, which don't exercise all the muscles. Emma's also worried
about her calves being too bulky. Running should be enough to get them
toned, but it's important to do lots of stretching afterwards.

Makeover?'
'I think what I need is a couple of sessions with a
personal trainer like Kathryn Freeland. She gave three women (Jeanette,
Anna and Lucinda )stuck in an exercise rut (throught lack of time or
motivation) a fitness and nutrition assessment then divised individual
programmes that took into account their different lifestyles. After the
first week they had more energy and felt less stressed - and by the end
of the month they began to see a change in their bodies.' - Trish Halpin
Editor of Red Magazine. Kathryn Freeland says: 'Personal trainers aren't
just about fitness and training - we also offer advice on nutrition, how
to manage stress, giving up smoking, and posture. Before a treatment
begins, I do a verbal assessment to find out a clients's current fitness
levels, health and exercise history, nutrition and goals, so that I know
what kind of routine will be suitable. It's great to work out in the
comfort of your own home, at your convenience. It's also much easier to
feel motivated when our're encouraged by a trainer who varies the
routine.

‘No more tummy
trouble’
Is there time for tummy repair? According to
Kathryn, the first thing to think about is posture. Many of us spend our
day in a sedentary position; this can lead to lower back problems and
slackens the waistline. Sitting up straight with your body well aligned
helps work the muscles of the stomach and back. Simple exercises
targeting the abdominals (core) muscles should be done for about 15
minutes per day. Don’t expect to achieve miracles. Results will vary
according to your age, weight and genes. Older women may find it
difficult to lose potbellies especially in the run up to menopause. Fat
starts to be deposited around the waist where it collects beneath loose
skin to form rolls of flab. Most women can achieve great results with a
combination of diet and exercise alone.

London-based training company Absolute Fitness in 1997. Kathryn warns

maximum you should be losing is two pounds a week. Be sensible, eat
